Appliqués are a great way to spruce up your clothes or add a little flare. Many women enjoy
adding appliqués to their blouses, tee shirts, jackets, pants, etc.
Applying appliqués is a fairly easy process too. For people who do not have access to a heat
press, there are two simple ways to apply appliqués at home, either by sewing them on or by using an iron.
Here are directions on how to apply with an iron:
1. Prepare. First you should prepare the surface
that you are applying the appliqué to. The item you are applying the appliqué to should be clean, free of
wrinkles, free of lint, etc. It is also important to make sure you are applying the appliqué to material that
can be heated safely. You should not use materials that can not withstand the high temperature that is
necessary to affix the appliqué, such as silk, nylon, waterproof material, highly elastic material, etc.
2. Set your iron at 375 degrees, usually this will
be the highest setting on your iron. You may need to refer to your users manual to make sure your iron doesn't
go higher than 375 degrees. Make sure that you do not have water in the iron as you need to use a dry heat, no
steam.
3. Place the appliqué on the garment. Be sure
to position it carefully as once you apply the heat you will probably not be able to move the appliqué with out
damaging the garment and/or appliqué.
4. Press and apply. Next place a thin pressing cloth
over the appliqué and then press the iron down on the appliqué. You want to press the iron without moving the
iron while applying pressure. It is a combination of the heat and pressure that adheres the appliqué. You will
want to apply the iron and pressure to the appliqué for about 30 seconds.
5. Do the backside. Turn your garment inside out and
repeat step four.
